In light of the humanitarian crisis caused by the conflict in Ukraine, with the Decision 2022/382, the European Council of Ministers of the EU has granted Temporary Protection to all Ukrainian citizens who fled from Ukraine and entered the Schengen area as of 24 February 2022.
Temporary protection is granted based on the sole proof of someone’s Ukraine nationality.
Protection is also granted to Ukrainians’ close family members (spouse, minor children, dependent close family members such as parents), regardless of their nationality.
If you want to know how to apply for temporary protection in practice, you should contact the Italian police headquarter closest to where you are. Or you can browse for relevant information published by those police headquarter.
If you are Ukrainian and you have entered the Schengen area before 24 February 2022, then Temporary protection does not apply to you, and you need to follow the ordinary procedure to apply for international protection. Find more information here.
