Following in other EU countries’ footsteps, this new type of Italian visa aims at meeting the needs of an increasingly delocalized world of work, also due to the strong incentive given by the global pandemic crisis in 2020/2021.
Moreover, the initiative, on the one hand, can be tied to the desire to attract new potential tax residents with medium/high income in Italy, capable of contributing significantly to the national tax revenues without taking up Italian jobs. In fact, the digital nomad is usually someone who works for a foreign employer or contractor.
The introduction of a Visa for Digital Nomads seems to be, on one hand, a possible new source of revenue for the State and the Italian economy; on the other hand, an unprecedented opportunity for whoever wants to enjoy the Italian ‘dolce vita’ without giving up their jobs in their country of origin or former residency.
This paper is a brief guide for non-EU citizens who are considering staying in Italy medium or long term while working remotely. This opportunity is effectively open only as of 4 April 2024 due to the issuance of the implementing Decree of the Home Office.
