European citizens can travel and reside freely in all the countries of the European Union. In fact, the freedom of movement and establishment within the borders of the European Union for its citizens is one of the fundamental pillars of the Union itself. The same freedom of movement is granted to citizens of Iceland, Norway, Switzerland, and the Republic of San Marino, even though these states are not members of the European Union.
Conversely, citizens of all other countries in the world, if they intend to settle continuously in Italy for more than 90 days, must obtain a long-term visa (so-called National) and the corresponding residence permit once they have entered Italy. On the other hand, if the non-EU citizen only intends to enter Italy and stay for a maximum of 3 months, in some cases they must obtain a short-term visa (so-called Schengen). In other cases, depending on the passport they hold and their citizenship, they can enter Italy without any visa. At this hyperlink, you can find the list of countries exempt from the Schengen visa.
This section of our website is therefore dedicated to those non-European citizens interested in entering Italy and staying for short or long periods who need a short-term or long-term visa (Schengen or National). Browse through the various subsections of this area of the site to find the most suitable visa for you or search for it in an instant using the keyword search tool.
